While still in its initial stages it will be added to constantly and covers general ecenomics subjects while at the same time dealing with current topics from the news that provide a welcome backdrop to an elucidating chapter in economics as well, e.g. Of Mortgage Brokers, ARMs, Attrition and Marathons .CrisisMavenhttp://crisismaven.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-34769027256477455272010-01-13T03:28:31.559-05:002010-01-13T03:28:31.559-05:00its refreshing to hear the university's view o...its refreshing to hear the university's view on writing beyond the "proper" structure and formAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-3868144428536068812009-12-08T09:48:19.548-05:002009-12-08T09:48:19.548-05:00Many institutions limit access to their online inf...Many institutions limit access to their online information. I feel like I commanded the most attention from the audience when I forced myself to paraphrase certain portions of my paper. Perhaps, instead of just reading through each of our respective pieces, and therefore having to cut out large and possibly necessary components, our presentations could be a discussion of our papers supported by what we consider our most vital excerpts. I feel that this would be far more effective in capturing and retaining the audiences' attention, as a straight reading is usually done in an unchanging drone and can put some listeners to sleep...

Also, physical comfort has a tremendous influence on the quality of the reading. I, for one, kept sniviling as my voice grew more and more nasal and drowsy by the minute. Take care to remedy any of these petty discomforts - it'll help a great deal.Mattnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-24635632116319390562009-03-31T16:08:00.000-04:002009-03-31T16:08:00.000-04:00I would agree with Paz. If I could go back and redo the presentation I would probably cut out a lot more background; if these items are omitted they can be easily clarified in discussion.

I regret having to speed through the "meat" of my paper and my conclusion. As Paz said, as writers we spent the majority of our time meticulously developing our core argument. Having sped through what I would consider the most important aspect of my paper was a shame, especially since the audience must rely entirely on our oral presentation.

A few people expressed to me after the presentation that they would have preferred to have a copy or an excerpt with which to read along.

Perhaps sharing excerpts of our paper instead of attempting to downsize the entire paper into 15 minutes may have been a better approach to the time constraint (and audience attention constraint, as I imagine listening to three entire papers becomes a lot to take in at once.) I understand however: faced with having forced to "cut" away at your paper is a little painful. Perhaps there can be compromise.

Overall however, I believe it was a success. Write tight, if you will. I thought at first that writing the 15 pages or so would be difficult, but I easily got 25 pages written. The critical issue then became trying to find the core arguement that you are trying to make. Forcing the presentation into 15 minutes makes you recognize how slipshod your writing can be sometimes. I would encourage you to read your paper aloud after you've written it but before you turn it in, because vocalization makes you realize how much excess and paraphrasing you (or at least I) do.Pazhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16498571066166908059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-50459465594984842562009-03-30T15:02:00.000-04:002009-03-30T15:02:00.000-04:00Great article Jared, well done.Great article Jared, well done.Abdullah Alhusseinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-68229717789689323052009-03-05T09:48:00.000-05:002009-03-05T09:48:00.000-05:00Thanks so much for all these wonderful suggestions...Thanks so much for all these wonderful suggestions! I'm holding group conferences with my students this week, and I sent out this post after we met to inform them of additional revision strategies. In our conferences, we've been talking a lot about never underestimating the power of a good topic sentence. And, we've been using those topic sentences to write up after-the-fact outlines of one another's papers. That's really been helping my students see where their order works and doesn't. Having students expand upon that activity with the ones listed above is really going to help them write some fabulous papers. Thanks everyone!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07270180824160817634noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-68031366153402136922009-03-03T21:36:00.000-05:002009-03-03T21:36:00.000-05:00Eric Drown said...These are great suggestions.I wo...Eric Drown said...
These are great suggestions.

I would add that in order for real revision to be successful, writers have to be so confident that they can generate so many ideas worth writing about that they're willing to throw away ones that aren't good enough, relevant enough, or productive enough.

Likewise, good writers have to be so attuned to meeting their readers' needs that they're willing to jettison words, paragraphs, pages, and structures when they don't work for readers.

Revision isn't tinkering; it's often wholesale rewriting, rethinking, recomposing. Holding onto words, ideas, or structures just because they're already on the page is the surest way to sabotage your best efforts at revision.

Hope this helps!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-61305977651149786562009-02-18T21:55:00.000-05:002009-02-18T21:55:00.000-05:00Congratulations Lauren and Derek!Congratulations Lauren and Derek!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-54724262989073068882009-02-09T18:40:00.000-05:002009-02-09T18:40:00.000-05:00As a freshman in Professor Ryder's UW20 course las...As a freshman in Professor Ryder's UW20 course last year, learning through service in the community not only helped me to become a better writer, but also taught me a lot about my new DC community. Volunteering at the Dinner Program for Homeless Women each week helped me to gain a better understanding of the issues of poverty and homelessness facing DC.

I wrote my research paper for the course about sexual violence against homeless women and the paper had an added sense of urgency to me because of my work at DPHW. Putting real faces to the issues we read about in class made the academic discourses come alive and I grappled with how to make the research I was doing as useful as possible largely because of my relationship with DC's homeless.

I am grateful to have taken a class that equipped me not only with an appreciation for my DC community, but also with the research and writing skills to analyze and seek to change it. I hope that more professors at GW will incorporate service-learning into their classes as it has been an invaluable part of my experience.

-Anna JohnsonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-89847605702944689782009-02-09T16:08:00.000-05:002009-02-09T16:08:00.000-05:00I took a service learning UW with Professor Ryder ...I took a service learning UW with Professor Ryder last year. My area of service learning focused on the environment, and I worked with Washington Parks and People. I think service learning UW's are the best way to go. The topics we talked about during class time actually applied to my work with WPP, and I felt that I could really use what I was learning in the real world. Not only did the class apply to my work with WPP, but my final paper directly helped the organization I worked with, so I didn't feel like I was writing a useless research paper that would get thrown away after being graded. It's great that we have this option for UWs at this school. Not only did I learn how to write college-grade papers, but could also apply my skills to an organization and help them progress. In fact, I continued to work with WPP's coordinator this year on a new organization- an opportunity I would never have had had it not been for Professor Ryder's UW service learning class.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-1894989321494723922009-02-07T11:24:00.000-05:002009-02-07T11:24:00.000-05:00I appreciate the candor too, and think that it'd b...I appreciate the candor too, and think that it'd be cool to get a version of this written by students who have taken UW20, too!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8168081635427633282.post-5370344143497254892009-01-13T00:06:00.000-05:002009-01-13T00:06:00.000-05:00Appreciate the candid manner of this article and l...Appreciate the candid manner of this article and look forward to a challenging semester.
